Some Things We Learned Along the Way

1) Child's Glacier is 36 stories tall and 13 miles long.
2) Otolith= ear bones behind the brain used to ID hatchery of origin by analyzing growth rings marked by temperature changes  or salt.
3) Upriver there is a boreal forest and downriver it is a temperate forest.
4) A slough is a body of water where water goes both directions.
5) There are 134 incubators at the Gulkana hatchery.
6) The pipeline crosses 5 water tributaries.
7) 70 million tons of sediment are deposited by the Copper River annually.
8) 60% of Sockeye commercial catch in Copper River fisheries were hatchery fish.
9) The second largest eruption on North America was Mt. Churchill.
10) The 1964 earthquake was one that happens every 400-600 years. (The delta is continually sinking and the earthquake happens relieving pressure and causing the plate to move up.
11) Deer were introduced to Cordova.
12) There are two bridges across the Copper River.
13) There is a 80% survival rate from green eggs to fry compared to 10% in the wild.
14) The pipeline is 48" in diameter.
